About Us
The Digital Scribe is an open source project hosted by SourceForge. Designed in PHP and MySQL it should work on any linux box with reasonably current software. The Digital Scribe was designed to easily put student work and homework assignments online in the confines of the K-12 school system. It was designed by Jeff Conor and a cadre of supporters have assisted in testing and debugging. History
The Digital Scribe began at Pioneer Elementary School. A teacher wanted to know if I could put some of her student's work online. Without giving it another thought I agreed. It wasn't long before I was coming in every day to put this work online. While it took me about 20 hours, I managed to put up one entire project for the class. There had to be a better way. I was taking an introductory PHP class and I was eager to apply what little I knew. I figured if one teacher wanted to put their student's work online, then others must want to as well. So I started to make a web based system that would allow me to put student work up in a tenth of the time that I had done before. It wasn't long before the project scope exploded into a system that students would enter their work into, teachers would approve the work, and I would be blissfully out of the loop. The only problem is that it meant a lot of up front work by me to get the system in place. I worked on this system on and off for about a year before I felt it was ready for some outside testers. I unleashed the system onto Pioneer Elementary School and the technical coordinator loved it. She heavily promoted it among the teachers and half a dozen early adopters gave it a spin. The system was an instant success! Sure, there was the occasional bug where deleting a picture from one student's work would also delete the picture of a seemingly random student, but we worked through those. After the success at Pioneer I spent the summer refining the system by adding minor bug fixes, features, and additional data checking. It was around this time that I began to wonder what I would do now that the system was almost complete. I knew other schools could benefit from this system and I mulled over how to best set up the system for them. In the end I decided on modifying the system to be completely portable so anyone with a smidgen of computer knowledge could install and run it. I'm proud to say that I've accomplished this and yet I'm still adding and refining the system. I have had invaluable help and feedback from the technical coordinator, teachers, and administration at Pioneer Elementary School, a district technical coordinator, and a technical coordinator from a nearby high school. Without their help I would never have released a stable version of the Digital Scribe. So thank you! You may contact me at:
